I’m thrilled to announce the publication of my newest Italian fable, “La Regina Ratto,” in the November/December issue of The Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction.
I have many people to thank for reading early drafts of this story and helping me improve it, including Rick Wilber, Lisa Lanser Rose, and Kate Larrabee. Special thanks to my Italian teacher brillante, Helen Redmount, who patched up my Italian language mistakes in the final hour. And a tip of the hat to C. C. Finlay for publishing the story in one of the finest magazines the SF genre has to offer. I’m a lucky guy.
Finally, congratulations to the new editor of the magazine, Sheree Renee Thomas, who will replace C. C. Finlay early next year.

Hello, Nick. I read this and liked it a lot. Is this story, or any of your other stories, based on a pre-existing Italian folk tale?

Hi, Phil. So far my fables have not been based on existing ones. Rather, I’ve leaned on many of the traditional tropes of Italian folk tales to make my own. But I have thought about rewriting some of the originals and setting them in modern times. Sooner or later I’ll probably try it. Thanks for reading the stories and letting me know you’ve enjoyed them. I’ve gathered them all into a collection and I’m looking for a publisher. If I ever find one, I’ll announce it here. 😎
